An accepted norm is that a submariner should be of average
height and weight to reduce risk exposure due to the confines in
space and access to life saving systems.
Entry Level Requirements. To be considered as a Submariner an
applicant must meet the following Entry Level Requirements:
- Be a volunteer.
- Be a South African Citizen
- Be between 18 and 22 years
- Preferably be single
- Not be area bound
- Have no serious criminal record. (Police certificate
required)
- Comply with medical fitness requirements of the SANDF
- Be free from physical disabilities and not suffer
from claustrophobia or a fear of heights
- Be able to pass a navy swim test consisting of;
- A safety jump off a 3m tower in overalls;
- 10m underwater swim in overalls;
- 50m swim using three safety strokes; and
- Tread water or float for 15 minutes (removal of
overalls optional)
