As part of enhancing and improving strategic relationship between the South African Navy (SAN) and United States Navy, the newly appointed USA Attaché, Captain S. Morgenfeld, accompanied by Major A.J. Segal, visited the SAN Headquarters on 7 November 2016. The primary purpose was to introduce himself to the top leadership of the South African Navy and also creating solid foundation for future engagements on various naval related issues.

Rear Admiral S.L. Pillay, Chief Director Maritime Strategy (CDMS), hosted the visit. In his welcoming speech, CDMS introduced Rear Admiral (JG) N.S. Gogi, Director Maritime Intelligence together with Cdr M.M. Carelse and unpacked linkages between DMI and Naval Foreign Relations. In the discussion CDMS took an opportunity to clarify channels of command to be followed, should Captain S. Morgenfeld intends to submit any request to the SAN. This clarification was critical to ensure some delays identified in the discussion are avoided in future.

Captain S.Morgenfed is the new broom in South Africa as Attaché and is still trying to adapt to new terrain and to understand its dynamics. He however confirmed that he had already attended critical events such as AAD, which gave him a picture of what to expect as attaché in South African battle space.
