For the two years in a row
SAS WINGFIELD’s men have been coming together at the SAS
WINGFIELD wardroom to celebrate, embrace and cherish
being men of character and substance. September is a
month highly anticipated and looked forward to by most
men in the unit, as is the month where the SAS WINGFIELD
“MENS HEALTH AWARENESS DAY” takes place. The focal point
(theme) this year was: sexual health. Statistically,
sexual problems and sexuality is one of the leading
causes of broken homes.

A proud Officer Comanding Captain A.C. Kriger thanking
his hardworking organising committe after a great day.
The day kicked off with an
opening prayer by Chaplain E.N. Fingo, followed by the
welcoming by the Officer Commanding of SAS WINGFIELD
Captain A.C. Kriger. The keynote speaker of the day was
Mr. Glenn de Swart representing the Ivan Tom Center for
Men’s Health. He delivered a powerful and insightful
presentation emphasizing exactly on what the day aimed
to address, he talked about the underlying issues that
average men tend to overlook and treat as if they are
not there. He spoke mostly about the variety of sexual
choices amongst men, consequences of such choices and
the societal approval or disapproval of such choices. He
therefore urged all those who find themselves in such
situations to always exercise caution and be safe or
alternatively to call the “Health 4 Men” number when in
need of some advice.
Next, Mr. Makhado from MSP
developments gave an outstanding presentation about the
importance of owning a home at an early age, as compared
to the common trend in the SA NAVY of buying flashy cars
instead of investing in property .To take their minds
off serious issues there were lucky draws and prizes
(most of them sponsored by Midas). Next, Chaplain E.
Johnson spoke about basic hygiene.
A delicious stand-easy on
the veranda of the wardroom was served by the capable
galley Staff. Just after stand-easy OLD MUTUAL took to
stage to tell the attendees about their new products
that allows their clients to consolidates all their dept
and pay reasonable installments to OLD MUTUAL as
compared to paying multiple installments to different
institutions. A psychologist Mr. May (SAHMS) gave a
fresh psychological perspective as to why men behave and
engage in certain sexual activities. He highlighted
stress as amongst the leading causes of sexual
disorders.
The last speakers of the
day were from the Cape Town Traffic Management Service.
They shared the stage telling the members how to be
responsible drivers on the road and informing them about
the current statistics of road accidents and deaths on
the road.
To conclude the day Mr B.
Gambushe on behalf of the organizing committee took a
few minutes to thank the sponsors who made the event
possible, the likes of Nestle, MSP developments, Sunbird
Perfumes (Bellville), AutoZone (Epping), Old Mutual (N1
City Mall), Mens Health Magazine, Mangwanani African Day
Spa, Ivan Tom Center for Men, Midas (Goodwood), Cape
Town Traffic Management Service, Fruit & Veg City (N1
City Mall), Mr C. Stodart and Mrs. M. Curtis .The
Officer Commanding C.A.Kriger then gave a vote of thanks
to his organizing committee who took an initiative ,
doing good out of their own will for the benefit of the
others in the same breath he thanked everyone for
attending. It was then time for a scrumptious
well-prepared lunch prepared by the never disappointing
catering staff.
Certainly it was a day well
spent and well organized Bravo Zulu to the organizers
because all the participants left for home with huge
goodie bags, lots of prizes, full stomachs and most
importantly they left well informed and as changed men.
