The South African Institute
of International Affairs (SAIIA) is a non-governmental
research institute focused on the continent’s
international relations. Amongst its many initiatives,
the institute also has a youth development programme
which fosters awareness on international affairs and
programmes that stimulates public debate amongst young
people in order to cultivate future leaders and
researchers in the country.

Chief Director Maritime
Strategy (CDMS), R Adm B.H. Teuterberg was invited by
the SAIIA Youth Programme to be the key speaker on
‘Piracy in the Gulf of Aden’ on 31 August 2012 at SAIIA
Hall, Wits University. The presentation involved 24
schools from around the country who were invited to
stimulate debate on the contentious issue of Piracy
around the Gulf of Aden. The scenario required each
school to represent a country from around the world that
had to listen and analyse the presentation by the key
speakers and thereafter pose questions and comments on
the topic.
The anti-piracy presentation
began with a keynote address by SAIIA Researcher, Ms
Lisa Otto followed by CDMS, R Adm Teuteberg.
Opportunities were given to the participants to pose
question on the presentation. After an extensive two
hour debating session the presentation was adjourned
with all in attendance enjoying light refreshments.
The day proved to be
fruitful and educational as the SA Navy’s leadership
ensured that they pass their baton of knowledge to this
country’s future leaders.
