The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) is a non-governmental research institute focused on the continent’s international relations. Amongst its many initiatives, the institute also has a youth development programme which fosters awareness on international affairs and programmes that stimulates public debate amongst young people in order to cultivate future leaders and researchers in the country.

Chief Director Maritime Strategy (CDMS), R Adm B.H. Teuterberg was invited by the SAIIA Youth Programme to be the key speaker on ‘Piracy in the Gulf of Aden’ on 31 August 2012 at SAIIA Hall, Wits University. The presentation involved 24 schools from around the country who were invited to stimulate debate on the contentious issue of Piracy around the Gulf of Aden. The scenario required each school to represent a country from around the world that had to listen and analyse the presentation by the key speakers and thereafter pose questions and comments on the topic.

The anti-piracy presentation began with a keynote address by SAIIA Researcher, Ms Lisa Otto followed by CDMS, R Adm Teuteberg. Opportunities were given to the participants to pose question on the presentation. After an extensive two hour debating session the presentation was adjourned with all in attendance enjoying light refreshments.
