The 18th of July commemorates the birthday of former President Nelson Mandela and also marked the 4th time the annual Mandela day celebrations took place. In the spirit of Madiba's humanitarian character, the aim of the day is to provide a charitable service to local communities and to support the needy and less fortunate citizens around us.

Capt M.A. Boucher and Miss de la Rey gave an explanation of the importance of giving back to the community

SAS SPIOENKOP selected a welfare organisation in the Fish Hoek, Kommetjie, Noordhoek area to support for the the day. The Sinethemba Day-care Centre in Masiphumele for children with special needs was chosen. Sinethemba means “We have hope.”

The ship’s company of SAS SPIOENKOP decided to show their support by donating clothing, non perishable and cleaning gear as well as painting class rooms in the centre. The ship’s company also cleaned the vegetable garden, and donated and planted various seeds, which will help sustain the centre to in the future. Some members of the ship’s company assisted the staff with exercises for specific children, whilst the some of the other members enjoyed play-time with the kids. A soup kitchen was provided for the day.

The day was ended by a tree planting ceremony in the playgrounds. These trees will provide shade for the children when fully grown. Ms De La Rey’s heartfelt thanking of the members raised a lump in many sailors’ throats.
