So while you spring clean, re-arrange and clear out your house, pull a box closer and assist the three military hospitals to clear their lists of much needed items such as three quarter duvet covers, DVD Players, baby blankets, bar fridges with lock, pyjamas for 5-10 years (boys and girls), baby prams, fans (desk type), material to make theatre clothes (has to be pure cotton) and single bed duvets and covers”.

The above excerpt taken from an article written by CPO Oosthuizen in Dec 2011 about a profile on the children’s Ward at 2 Military Hospital impacted the SANRSF thus influencing them to embark on a drive to assist with a contribution.

The project was coordinated by Mrs Karin Moorees. She made known the need to the Staff members of SAS SALDANHA and encouraged them to make donations. The SANRSF spent a few months collecting donations. The response of the staff members was overwhelming and they gave generously. The donations consisted of blankets, toys, teddy bears, colourful posters, pyjamas, a DVD player and among others, a stroller.

On 25 May 12 the ladies of the Spouses Forum took a fun filled road trip by bus to Wynberg to make their donations. On arrival the ladies were welcomed by Major Taljaard (PRO), Capt Warren (Sister in charge of the children’s ward) and Dr Walele (doctor in Paediatrics). They were amazed at the contributions from the Spouses Forum.

The Officer Commanding of 2 Military Hospital, Col I. Bux, then addressed the spouses expressing his sincere gratitude for the generous contributions made by SAS SALDANHA and thanked the ladies for their effort. His words: “I have never seen the children’s ward so busy with so many people. What is important is not what you have given but the time given in order to make a difference”. He also went on to say that the hospital is appreciative of all the donations and it will certainly be put to good use.

After their visit to the hospital the ladies spoilt themselves, for all the time and effort put into this project, by visiting Butterfly World in Klapmuts. Although the weather did not play along, the ladies made the best of the day and found time to enjoy nature.

The chairperson wishes to express her sincere thanks and appreciation to Mrs Moorees for her efforts in coordinating the project as well as the ships company for their generous contributions. You have done SAS SALDANHA proud!

Let us all get together and make the children’s ward at 2 Military Hospital a happy place for our children. Donations can be dropped off at the logistical department at the hospital. Even the smallest item will make a difference!
