The SA Navy held a
demonstration of sea and air manoeuvres associated with
combating piracy in Simon’s Town on 22 March 2012 as
part of Ex Good Hope V. Ex Good Hope V is the
fifth bi-annual exercise between the German Armed Forces
and the SANDF which commenced on 6 March off the coast
of Durban and concludes on 23 March in Simons’ Town.

The following elements
participated in the demonstration: German Type 122
frigate, LÜBECK, South African Meko class Frigates, SAS
ISANDLWANA and SAS AMATOLA, and MK 64 Lynx helicopter as
well as Marine and Special Forces elements.
The aim of the exercise
is to provide collective open water training for the
German Bundeswehr and the SANDF in order to build
interoperability and develop mutual understanding
between the two forces especially in the light of the
increased threat of piracy on the East Coast of Africa.
