The Big Walk was started on the 05th June 1903 when the Spartan Harriers committee decided to organise a long distance walk in the South Peninsula and benchmarked its success against the popularity of walking races in the United Kingdom. After 106 years of existence the walk kicked off on Sunday, 08 November 2009 at 09:00.

Even though the start of the race in 1903 was not overly successful, with only 61 participants, one can surely notice the growth in numbers after 106 years; hence it is now called the Big Walk. The race receives approximately 25 000 entries annually. The longest distance of the race is 80km and the shortest distance is 20km.

The South African Navy Divers took part in this year’s event. They displayed their level of fitness by carrying sand bags the entire route from Simon’s Town to Observatory, in the rainy weather.

The participation of the SA Navy Divers branch in the race is another form of the SAN’s friendly relations with the public. SA Navy is continually improving and maintaining such relationships.
