March
(First Month of Autumn Season)
Dos & Don'ts
Soil preparation for autumn starts in March.
Prepare beds by giving ample compost in the top 30 cm
of the soil.
Loosen the soil if it has been compacted by rains and
give a layer of mulch.
Test the soil for acidity and add lime if necessary,
depending on what will be planted.
Dig in lots of well-matured compost and a dressing of
super phosphate.
Remove exhausted soil from window boxes and fill with
enriched composted garden soil.

Fuchsias
Plant, Sow or Propagate
Plant rhubarb roots, broad beans, lettuce,
radishes, leeks and onions.
Sow beetroot, parsnips, spinach, Brussels sprouts and
celery.
Sow sweet pea seeds and transplant them from seed
trays when they are about 3 cm high.
Take cuttings and layers of ornamental shrubs,
fuchsias, pentstemon and geraniums.
Planting Tips
Buy bulbs now while there are still a wide variety
available and store them in a dark cupboard until they
are planted.
Bulbs that flower in winter and spring must not be
planted in hot soil as they need cool soil and water to
sprout.
