'ten week training course'

The Protection Force Personnel provide a vital service
to all Naval units, by making sure the environment is secure
and safe. The Protection Branch is divided into two
elements: |
- Landward – covering shore based protection and security
- Seaward – covering the naval harbour facilities and deep-sea
anchorage.
If you are selected for the protection branch you will complete a
ten weeks functional part 1 course presented in Simon’s Town. Some
of the subjects covered on this course are: Roadblocks; Searching of
vehicles and buildings; Clearing of buildings; Cordoning-Off of
buildings; Weapon handling (which includes the 9mm pistol, shotgun,
R5 rifle and Basic explosives; evacuation procedures in the event of
fires and Bomb Scares; Protection of the Vulnerable Parts of the
Base; EVACUTION Procedures in the event of fires and Bomb Scares;
protection of the Vulnerable Parts of the Base, Escorting of VIPs;
etc.
Once you have successfully completed the functional part 1, you
can be staffed at a number of naval units, where you will be
responsible for Access Control at the establishment. You may also be
required to assist South Africa Police Service with Roadblocks and
Maritime Coastal Management with anti-poaching.
You also have the opportunity to broaden your career by
joining the following fields in Protection:
- Dog handling which includes
- Security
- Attack
- Drug and ammunition (sniffer)
- Boats crew (Harbour Patrol Boats)
- Coxswain Part 1 (semi-rigids)
As you progress through the ranks you can get the opportunity to
become a Coxswain by completing a Coxswain Part 2 (10m vessels)
course or to become a VIP Protector. Once you have all the necessary
qualifications, you can apply to be staffed in the Maritime Reaction
Squadron mustering.
